Karma – Cause and Effect

This morning my girlfriend Cori read to me from The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra. Cori reads one of the Laws from the book each morning (one of many things I admire about her). The idea being that you begin each day reading a law and apply what you’ve read throughout your day. Today she read “The Law of Karma or Cause and Effect“. The synopsis on the first page reads:

“Every action generates a force of energy that returns to us in like kind… what we sow is what we reap. And when we choose actions that bring happiness and success to others, the fruit of our karma is happiness and success.”

Now, Cori has never asked me to listen or suggested I might learn something from what she’s reading; yet she demonstrates, in her actions and in the way she treats others and lives her life, a certain quality that draws me to whatever it is she is influenced by. And so I listen, gladly, to whatever she’ll read me.

Motorcycling, I’m finding, is a microcosm of life where the lessons come at you faster and force you to learn at an accelerated rate. Mentors are hard to come by but if you are lucky, pay attention and recognize when you come in contact with someone who changes your perceptions and from whom you can learn, your road, and your life, will be the better for it. Luckily I’ve had many mentors, both in riding and in life.

Lessons hurt, that’s a certainty; but learning from them and passing that knowledge along has the potential to heal and to alter the path of those who have yet to learn them.

“Karma is the eternal assertion of human freedom… Our thoughts, our words, and deeds are the threads of the net which we throw around ourselves.”

Ride safe.
