Garden State Bike

One of my all-time favorite movies is Garden State (rated R, 2004), written and directed by Zach Braff of Scrubs fame, also starring Natalie Portman, Method Man, Sir Ian Holm (of Lord of the Rings fame), and Jim Parsons (long before he found fame on Big Bang Theory). The movie is about Braff’s character Andrew Largeman, 26, a struggling waiter/actor, who returns home from Hollywood upon hearing of the death of his mother. Without giving too much away it’s a great film that has made some lists as one of the top 500 movies ever made.

1980 Dnepr

Anyway in the film Braff rides around town on a motorcycle with a sidecar that his character’s grandfather left him. Upon offering Portman’s character a ride in the sidecar she says “Sidecars are for bitches. Anyone who rides in one is automatically your bitch. Thus I will ride on the back”. The bike is in many scenes in the film. Turns out it’s a 1980 Dnepr, a Russian brand in use since 1967.

Check out the movie. Braff selected the music (for which he also won a grammy), which includes The Shins, Iron and Wine and Simon & Garfunkel.
