The Road Often Travelled: ATGATT

The article “The Road Often Travelled: ATGATT” was originally published on the “RoadRUNNER Motorcycle Touring & Travel” magazine website on 03/11/2012.

My bike disappearing from beneath me remains the strangest sensation I’ve ever experienced. You get used to the sound and vibration of the engine and wind noise, which ordinarily only ends when the ride does, and you shut the bike down. This time, in an instant, there was complete silence as I flew through the air. Next came a dull smack of plastic from my helmet and the armor in my jacket and pants impacting the road, followed by some tumbling sounds, and then no sound at all until some passersby stopped to help me.

I’d been struck in the side by a deer at about 45 miles per hour. After a few minutes of body inventory I stood up, brushed myself off, and realized I was fine. I did find out later that I’d broken my collarbone. It’s a testament to the quality of today’s protective gear that, except for my helmet, the same jacket and over-pants I wore that day lasted another two years.

The worst part of crashing is having to tell those close to you what happened. You know what most reactions will be. The majority of people who don’t ride have preconceived notions about how dangerous motorcycle riding can be, and crash stories only reinforce their beliefs. Being able to say, “Yes, I’ve crashed and walked away,” makes it easier to allay some of their fears, and wearing proper gear increases the likelihood of this should the unthinkable happen.

I’ve always been safety conscious and still wear a light jacket all summer, along with a helmet, boots and gloves. My reasons are many, primarily my own safety of course; but it’s equally important that the people we leave at home when we set out for a ride know that we are aware of the risks and are serious about riding safely. It’s important for me that they have that small peace of mind. Let’s face it, there are dangers involved in motorcycling; but as a former rock climber, I’ve always said that just because something involves some element of risk doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be pursued. It means it should be pursued seriously and with an eye towards being as safe as possible.

To that end, I’ve taken the safety courses available locally, wear all the gear all the time (ATGATT), read what I can about proper technique, and let my loved ones see me suit up. It’s the least I can do for myself, and certainly the best thing I can do for those who care about me.

Ride safe.

Blake Young Wins After Crash

Triumph Big Kahuna Atlanta: Round 2 of AMA Superbike took place over the weekend in Braselton, Ga. and featured one of the most improbable victories ever when Blake Young (Yoshimura Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000) crashed, yet recovered to win race 1 on Saturday. Young and series leader and returning champion Josh Hayes (Monster Energy Graves Yamaha YZF-R1) became entangled on lap 14 causing Young to be slammed to the track. The incident drew a red flag which forced a restart. The rules said that Young had to start from the last row of the grid. After the first lap of the restart Young had already worked his way up to fourth. Hayes and Young traded the lead until the last lap when Young was able to hold off Hayes for an amazing 0.293 second win.

Said Hayes: “For him to be able to get his stuff together and get back out there and race the way he did… bravo. Man, I think it’s a great story. It was a hero ride and it’s great for our sport. Big congrats to him.

Race 2 on Sunday was dull by comparison with reigning champion Josh Hayes Read more »

Screaming Banshee Horn Now Available

Back in January (2012) I wrote a post about the Banshee Horn system being developed by Peter Olt, an inventor with an electrical engineering background and CEO of Banshee Horn, LLC. At the time Peter’s product was on Kickstarter to raise money to fund the production of the Banshee Horn. Well, I’m glad to say Peter exceeded his funding goal and the Screaming Banshee Horn is now in full production and available for purchase.

The horn is connected to your existing horn wiring and can be installed in under an hour. The genius of this design is Read more »

Diesel Ducati in Soho

Cori approves

I took a little side trip to Soho last week to find the Diesel branded Ducati Monster 1100 EVO that I posted about a few weeks ago at the Soho Diesel store. It was well worth the trip. This thing is fantastic looking. It was autographed by Kentucky born 2006 MotoGP World Champion and Ducati factory rider Nicky Hayden and actor Adrien Brody (The Jacket, The Pianist). The bike will be on display throughout the country and then go into the private collection of it’s owner Renzo Rosso, the founder of Diesel.

I’ve got a thing for Ducati Monsters and this one is one great looking ride. The Monster Diesel is powered by the Desmodue Evoluzione engine which is the first two-valve Ducati to hit 100 hp. The “urban military chic” color scheme is different and ideal for urban areas. The locking rear cover actually hides a passenger seat. It is amazingly comfortable and ergonomically seems just perfect. Click here for the full specs. Below are some pics Read more »

7th Annual RoadRUNNER Magazine Touring Weekend

RoadRUNNER Magazine named Maggie Valley, North Carolina as the location for its 7th Annual Touring Weekend and Memorial Ride. Each year, the team at RoadRUNNER hosts this event in honor of the magazine’s founder, Christian Neuhauser. For the past six years, the Touring Weekend has been based at various locations along the East Coast, most recently landing in Staunton, VA (2011) and Bristol, VA (2010).

On July 11, 2012, the event will kick off with a welcome party and barbeque at this year’s base in the beautiful mountain town of Maggie Valley. To accommodate a growing number of participants, the weekend has been extended to four days—Thursday has been included as a time when attendees can choose to ride on their own, convene on the Maggie Valley Festival Grounds, where RoadRUNNER and a number of vendors will have booths, or take a five-minute walk to the nationally acclaimed motorcycle museum, Wheels Through Time.

On Friday and Saturday, Read more »

Tune of the week #21

This week’s pick is Welcome To The Working Week by Elvis Costello from My Aim Is True (1977). It only lasts 1:23 but it’s a great song. “I know it don’t thrill you, I hope it don’t kill you, welcome to the working week. You gotta do it ’til you’re through it so you better get to it”. Read more »

Road Rage in Brazil

I just wrote a post for RoadRunner Magazine called “Rage Against The Machines” about how important it is to control your anger as you ride. My buddy Chris sent me this video of a cager vs. motorcycle road rage incident in Brazil which illustrates my point. I’m not sure what led up to the footage below Read more »
